Start with the vehicle and its ownership.
Confirm the registered owners, VIN, mileage and title status. If your paper title is lost, FLHSMV says a duplicate is needed before selling. Electronic title transactions have their own requirements. A licensed dealership can help explain the process applicable to the transaction; do not assume private-sale procedures are identical to a dealer purchase.
Check for an existing lien.
According to FLHSMV, a Florida vehicle with an existing lien cannot be legally sold in a private sale until the lien is satisfied. A dealer transaction may involve lender payoff arrangements. If you still owe money, read our financed-car guide and discuss the current payoff with the buying team.
Record mileage and complete the title transfer.
The official seller guidance explains that the seller completes the Transfer of Title by Seller section, including buyer information, odometer information, price and sale date. Both parties acknowledge the odometer disclosure. FLHSMV recommends completing private-sale transactions at a motor vehicle service center to properly transfer ownership.
Your license plate stays with you.
In Florida, the license plate stays with the seller, not the vehicle. Remove it when you sell. FLHSMV describes when the plate may be transferred to a replacement vehicle and when it must be surrendered, including certain situations involving canceled insurance or moving out of state.
File the Notice of Sale.
Florida law requires sellers to file form HSMV 82050, the Notice of Sale and/or Bill of Sale. The official guidance explains that filing it helps protect the seller from liability associated with the sold vehicle. Keep copies of the transaction documents and confirm filing arrangements for your sale.

Our online appraisal request starts the dealership conversation. It is not a completed sale, title transfer or legal filing.
